The answer first
Play the Prologue and Act 1 until The Fall. In Act 2, follow the Brûz, Gondor, Carnán, and Eltariel quest lines while capturing the fortresses the missions require. The lines intentionally overlap; there is no single perfect order. Finish the optional-looking character stories before starting The Bright Lord, then complete the Epilogue fortress defenses for the full ending.
Prologue and Act 1: follow the road
The opening is mostly linear and teaches the systems in the order you need them. If two icons appear at once, either available story mission is safe; the strands join again before Act 2.
- Prologue: The New Ring. Follow the objectives and relearn movement, stealth, ranged attacks, and domination.
- Fellowship. Enter the Minas Ithil story and meet the Gondorian defenders.
- The Eyes of Sauron and Shadows of the Past. Purify the Haedir to reveal the map. Shadows of the Past challenges are useful practice but do not need perfect ratings for the story.
- The Seeing Stone and Knife in the Dark. Continue the main siege and follow the investigation prompts instead of wandering after every newly revealed collectible.
- No Man’s Land and Rain of Arrows. These character missions teach companion combat and battlefield tools. Complete both when they appear.
- Traitor’s Gate, The Arena, and Before Dawn. Upgrade gear before the Arena, read each captain’s weaknesses, and remember that retreating to recover health is allowed whenever the mission does not lock the doors.
- The Fall. Finish your urgent business in Minas Ithil, then complete this mission to close Act 1 and open the larger campaign.
Act 2: why the quest menu suddenly looks messy
Act 2 is a set of crossing story lines, not a 32-mission hallway. A mission in one line can unlock the next mission in another region or story. Use the Quests screen to see the character heading, requirement, region, and reward. If a line goes quiet, progress another active line or capture the fortress named by the requirement.
First, unlock the army and fortress loop
Start with Ring of Power to learn captain recruitment. Play Violent Nature when it appears, recruit the captains requested by the game, then complete the Núrnen siege sequence. The game may label the fortress tutorial The Etten or present the siege through the Núrnen objective chain; follow the gold siege marker. Complete The Fight Pits tutorial afterward so you understand how followers can earn promotions and infiltrate a fortress.
A comfortable order for the four main lines
This is a recommendation, not a hidden requirement:
- Brûz first. These missions teach conquest, defense, betrayal, and the army screen. Continue through The Best Defense, Damaged, Missing, The Poisoned Road, A Sighting, and Worse Than Death as they unlock.
- Gondor alongside Brûz. Play Allies, Blood Sport, The Uninvited, The Wages of War, and To Gorgoroth when their regions open. They provide story context and useful skill rewards without rushing you toward the finale.
- Carnán when you want a change of pace. Continue from Violent Nature through Carnán’s Bane, Frozen Flame, A Stench on the Wind, Of Ghûls and Graugs, The Burning Forest, Fire from Ice, and Army of the Dead. Later missions require more regions to be open.
- Eltariel last among the active choices. Her line is the spine that eventually unlocks the finale: The Witch-king’s Vision, The Three Towers, The Chosen, The Ritual, Reversal of Fortune, The Tower of Sorcery, The Scourge, Fire and Fury, and Gravewalkers.
How much army building do you actually need?
You only need enough loyal captains to win the next required siege. A safe routine for each new region is:
- Purify the Haedir so travel points and activities are visible.
- Interrogate Worms until the important captains and Warchiefs have known traits.
- Recruit captains near your level with few crippling weaknesses. Talion cannot recruit a captain above his own level, so shame or defeat that captain first if necessary.
- Target Warchiefs or infiltrate them if the fortress looks rough. You do not need to empty the entire army screen.
- Buy useful siege upgrades that exploit the defending Warchiefs, assign assault leaders, and start the mission.
The fortress assault guide has the full preparation and capture-point checklist.
Stop before The Bright Lord
You do not need every collectible, online vendetta, Shadows of the Past gold rating, or fight pit tier before moving on. Those are completion goals. The important cleanup is the named character quest lines, because they contain story, skills, and conclusions that make the finale land properly.
Act 3: The Bright Lord
Equip gear for direct combat rather than army management, then start the mission only when you have time for a long sequence. The game handles the travel and objectives from here. Follow the prompts, use the defensive tools the encounter teaches you, and do not worry about leaving the mission to rebuild an army—the warning exists because this act is deliberately self-contained.
Very light combat hint, no story spoiler
The finale includes several consecutive boss-style fights. Enter with a reliable healing method, pay attention to the counter or dodge prompt instead of forcing long combos, and save your strongest crowd-control ability for moments when several threats overlap.
Epilogue: Shadow Wars
After Act 3, defend your fortresses in the red siege missions shown on the map. Older launch-era guides describe a much longer ten-stage grind; the game was updated, so use the defense missions currently shown in your quest log rather than trying to match an old checklist.
Before each defense, replace empty captain slots, level followers who are far below the attackers, assign a strong Overlord and Warchiefs, and buy defenses that match the enemy assault. If you lose a fortress, the story is not over. Rescue captured followers if needed, rebuild the region, assault the fort, and continue. Finish the current Epilogue sequence to see the full ending.
Main story checklist
Can I replay a story mission?
Yes. Open the quest menu, select a completed mission, and use the replay option shown by the game. Replay results do not rewind your whole campaign.
Do I have to conquer Lithlad?
No. Lithlad is tied to Desolation of Mordor content and is not required for the base campaign ending.
When should I play the DLC?
For the cleanest story order, finish the base game through Act 3 before Blade of Galadriel because that DLC opens with major ending spoilers. Desolation of Mordor is more self-contained, but it also makes the most sense once you know Baranor and the fortress systems.
