Valheim is a popular open-world survival game that was developed by Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Publishing. Here is a basic walkthrough for beginners, however, Valheim is a vast game with various routes to take, this is just one possible way of approaching the game.
Starting out
- First steps: When you start the game, you’ll find yourself in the middle of a stone circle – the sacrificial stones. The bird Hugin will show up to provide some tips. Your first priority should be to gather resources. Start by picking up stones and punching trees for wood.
- Crafting your first tools: Craft a stone axe using wood and stone. This will help you to chop trees more effectively.
- Build a shelter: Choose a flat area preferably close to the water for resources. Start building your shelter using a hammer (wood and stones). Make sure to include a campfire inside for warmth and a cooking station.
- Exploring the Meadows: Gather more resources like food and materials, such as berries and boar meat, by hunting and foraging. Keep an eye out for Flint along the water’s edge, which you’ll need for upgraded tools.
- Crafting station (Workbench): Use wood to craft a workbench inside your shelter. The workbench allows you to create more advanced items, as well as upgrade your existing tools and equipment.
Progressing through the Game
- Leather Armour: Hunt boars and deer to collect scraps and leather. Use these to craft a crude bow, arrows and a set of leather armor.
- Summoning Eikthyr: Collect deer trophies by hunting deer, then summon the first boss Eikthyr at his mystical altar. This boss will drop Eikthyr trophy and hard antler once defeated.
- Mining and Smelting: Use the hard antler to craft the antler pickaxe. Now, you can start mining ores (copper and tin) found mostly in the Black Forest. Build a smelter to process your ores into metal bars and a charcoal kiln to fuel it.
- Bronze Age: Mix copper and tin at the forge to create bronze. Use bronze to create bronze tools, weapons, and armor.
- The Elder: Find the location of the second boss, The Elder, by interacting with runestones in burial chambers within the Black Forest. Gather the necessary items to summon him and take him down. This will allow you to create a swamp key.
Mid-Game
- The Swamp: With the swamp key, you can now access Sunken Crypts in the Swamp biome. Here, you will find iron. Beware of the tougher enemies and poisonous environment in this biome.
- Iron Age: Gather scrap iron in the sunken crypts and smelt it to create iron. This will allow you to craft iron gear and more advanced structures.
- Bonemass: The third boss is Bonemass, located in the Swamp. The battle requires preparation with poison resistance mead and blunt weapons.
Late-Game
- Mountain Biome: With iron gear, you can now face the freezing cold of the Mountain biome. Craft frost resistance mead for protection against the cold. Mine obsidian for new arrow types and silver for Wolf Armor and frost weapons.
- Moder: Find dragon eggs to summon the fourth boss, Moder, who is in the Mountain biome. Defeating Moder will grant you the ability to always have a tailwind while sailing.
- Plains Biome: Progress to the Plains biome. Beware of the challenging Fuling enemies and look out for flax and barley, which are essential for crafting black metal items and late-game food items.
- Yagluth: The fifth boss, Yagluth, is located in the Plains. Defeating him grants you a resistance buff against elemental damage.
Throughout the game, don’t forget to keep improving your base, tools, and weapons. The game involves a lot of exploring, crafting, and grinding. The biomes can be visited in various orders, and this walkthrough provides one of many possible routes. Don’t forget to experiment and forge your own path!
